Ciao! Naples is one of the most visited cities in Italy, and it is easy to see why. It features some of Italy’s most beautiful beaches, it is full of history, and it is known for being the birthplace of Pizza! Naples a must-visit destination, and so are the cities surrounding it. Today I will share some of my favourite places that are perfect for a day trip from Naples. Andiamo!
When visiting Naples, you must make time for a trip to Pompeii! Pompeii was once a rich and famous Roman city, until the nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted and covered the entire city in ash. It is now an even more famous tourist destination as the city is very well preserved. In fact, Pompeii is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The easiest way to get from Naples to Pompeii is by train, but there are many other transportation choices. When you get to Pompeii, you will be greeted by a beautiful view of the nearby Mount Vesuvius, the same mountain (that is also a volcano) that destroyed Pompeii almost a thousand years before.
You will definitely need an entire day to explore and experience Pompeii. Some places that you must visit in Pompeii include the Amphitheater of Pompeii, Temple of Jupiter, and many of the homes you will find while wandering around the town.
Tip: If you are planning on visiting during the summer, make sure to check the weather ahead of time, dress accordingly, and bring a lot of water!
Another famous city near Naples is Sorrento, known for its amazing views over the Bay Of Naples. It is quite possibly one of the most beautiful beachside towns in the entire world, as views from the top of the cliff are stunning.
Sorrento can be reached from Naples by train, car, or even ferry! When I visited, I took a ferry from Sorrento to Naples and it was one of the best experiences I had in Italy. The view across the Bay is breathtaking, and it was a really great experience!
Sorrento is a very beautiful town and it isn’t too big so it can be explored in half a day. It is always nice to have some extra time in a city, so an overnight stay would also be a great idea!
Benevento is a beautiful Italian town upon a hill, just an hour’s drive away from Naples. It is well known for being the home of Trajan’s arch, as well as a very impressive roman theatre. Benevento is a great city to visit if you want to get away from the more touristy areas of Italy, as it is full of locals and not usually crowded with tourists.
As I mentioned earlier, Benevento is a great place to get away from crowds. My favourite thing I did in Benevento was explore and really get a feel for the city. You can easily spend a half-day exploring the city!
The final spot on this list goes to Salerno! Salerno is a picturesque town southeast of Naples, famous for its beautiful beaches and amazing cuisine. It was also an area where heavy fighting took place during WWII, and is a great place to explore if you’re into history.
Salerno is about an hour and a half away from Naples by train. If planning a day trip, Salerno deserves at least half a day of your time. In fact, if you’re looking for a great place to start a trip through the Amalfi coast, Salerno is a great place to start!
Although I did not get to visit on my trip, I would’ve loved to visit the Isle Of Capri. Maybe next time!
